Well, 3:30am came around far too soon and we were up and ready to go. We started driving North all packed in my Volvo and didn't make it too far before the real adventure began. We had just passed over into Georgia (Woodbine to be exact) and there was not another soul on I-95. We passed two cops sitting on the side of the highway and a few second later the blue lights were coming up behind us. So here we are sitting on the side of I-95 at 4:30am getting a speeding ticket. Luckily, Jared was driving so this wasn't my fault :) Trust me that was not the way we wanted to start our day. So after we parted ways with the delightful law enforcement officers of Woodbine, who were obviously bored and needed something to do, we were on our way.
Once we got into South Carolina, we had to get off the interstate and get on a two-lane highway headed toward the coast. The scenery on this part of the drive was about as exciting as the drive on I-10 to Tallahassee. The closer we got to Conway, the creepier the houses on the side of the road became. A lot of them were abandoned and we would drive for miles without passing a single car on the highway. We were starting to feel like we were in Deliverence. So we of course started to wonder about what they place was going to be like where we were going to pick up the dogs. We were going to the breeder's house and we did not know what to expect. Based on the scenery we had seen so far, it wasn't looking good. We were hoping that we hadn't just driven 6 hours to show up at some sketchy looking place.
We finally arrived in Conway and found our way to the breeder's house. He had dogs everywhere! He had full grown labs, lab puppies, and they were all over the place. I could never keep up with all those dogs. Next came the hard part, we had to pick out our puppy. They were all so cute and fluffy, I just wanted them all! Luckily, there weren't too many black females in the litter so my choice was easy. After we picked out our pups and signed our paperwork, we were back in the car. We grabbed some lunch and started our drive home to Jacksonville, puppies in tow. The pups slept for most of the car ride all snuggled up together on the center console of my car. It didn't look too comfortable to me, but the puppies seemed to like it.
On our drive back, we had to stop in Savannah at Bass Pro because everytime we go anywhere that is remotely close to a Bass Pro Shop, we have to stop there. We took the pups into Bass Pro with us and Boden and I were rather popular. Every child in that store had to come pet the puppies, but they didn't mind the attention. We made our way back home and 12 hours of driving in one day had made us so tired. Tired or not, all I wanted to do was play with Lola so I was wide awake. When it was finally bedtime, we began the first of many nights of interrupted sleep by Lola.
Although I miss Lola being a tiny puppy, I don't miss the late night potty adventures and her chewing on my cell phone and the legs of my dining room table, among other things. She is a very calm and sweet dog, a great companion for high-energy Sadie. We have had a wonderful year with Lola and can't wait to take her duck hunting soon!
