When you get married, there are a lot of compromises that have to be made. Where are you going to live? Who is going to be in charge of paying the bills? How will you split up the holidays between your families? And one of the most challenging compromises to make...which religious denomination are you going to follow? Now, if you and your spouse both come from the same religious background, then that's a no brainier. However, what happens when you come from different or even opposing religious backgrounds? Which one is the "right" one?
I don't usually get into these serious topics on my blog, but I know a lot of people who are going through (or have gone through) this "battle" with their significant other, so I wanted to share my story.
Jared grew up in the Catholic Church and I grew up in the Methodist Church. We both attended church on Sundays with our families growing up and both of us went through Confirmation in our respective churches. Once we met in college, the topic never really was a big deal because neither of us regularly attended church at school. When we went home for holidays, we would attend church with our families, but it was never a major part of our relationship. We were both Christians, so which "type" of Christian we were really wasn't an issue at that time.
Prior to our wedding, we had to go through marriage counseling with my family's pastor to get our marriage license. He was the one who ended up marrying us since we got married in my hometown. During the counseling, we decided that we would obviously raise our children in Christianity, in a church that we would decide on together. At the time, we just weren't sure which church that would be.
Once we got married, the search for the right church began. At that point, both of us had attended Catholic and Methodist services multiple times and we knew one thing for sure...I did not want to be Catholic and Jared did not want to be Methodist. Well, that's inconvenient. So things became a bit more challenging. I guess I always assumed that when I got married, either my husband or I would take on the other person's religion. Being that we live in Jacksonville, and my family already has a church here that I grew up in, I thought that I was going to win this battle. I was wrong. And I must say that I gave in very easily to losing my home field advantage. As soon as Jared said that he did not think that our Methodist church was the right one for us, I agreed and we moved on. I was determined to find a church that both Jared and I enjoyed and were comfortable in. I learned that this is not a battle to be won by either party.
Alas, our new dilemma became...which denomination is right for us? We know we don't want to be Catholic or Methodist, but which denomination do we want to be? So we went through them all to find the right fit. And guess what, none of them were the right fit. Fail.
This was our ah-ha moment. We realized that we shouldn't be looking for a denomination or a label for our religion. Being able to say, "We are Catholic" or "We are Methodist", means nothing. We discovered that we needed to find the right group of people to worship with and when we found them, that would be our church; no matter which "label" the church had on the sign out front.
After more than 3 years of marriage, we finally found our church last summer. At first, I felt like I was abandoning the Methodist church by not staying with that denomination, but I realized that all those years of saying, "I am Methodist" just gave me a label, but didn't make me any different from any other Christian out there. Our new church is technically under the governing body of the Presbyterian Church, but for months I actually thought this church was non-denominational because they don't actively advertise their "label".
I never would have imagined that I would end up at this church. It's not very traditional. People wear whatever they want. There are no fancy pews or stained glass windows, but I still love it. And what I love about it has nothing to do with the building the service takes place in, but the people who are inside it. The first time we ever attended service there, I knew right away that it was the right fit for us. For probably the first time ever, I actually related to what the pastor was saying. It wasn't like he was up there preaching to me. It was more like he was one of our friends and we were just having a conversation. I got more out of that 30 minute sermon, than I have in 25 years of attending church. And every week that I go back, I learn something new.
The idea of raising my children in this church makes me excited because I am hoping that they will benefit greatly from the wonderful community that our church has to offer. The people in that church are the people who I want my children to be exposed to and learn from. And when my children grow-up and get married, I hope that attending a church that doesn't focus on a "label" will ensure that they won't have to experience this identity crisis like I did of having to leave behind my labeled religious denomination and find a new one.
So my advice to people who are going through this "battle" with their spouse is this...
Neither of you has to win or lose this battle. You are not abandoning your religion. Don't join your spouse's religion just because you feel like that is the "right" thing to do. Find a church that fits the two of you as a couple, no matter which "label" it has.
Instead, find all the churches in your area and every Sunday, go to a different one. At the service, talk to the people in the congregation around you and the pastor/priest/religious leader/whatever you want to call them and ask yourself if you can relate to these people. Do you feel comfortable around them? Would you want to be friends with them outside of church? After the service, talk to your spouse about the sermon. Did you get anything out of it? Did you actually learn something or did you feel like you were just sitting in church because it is what you are "supposed" to be doing on Sunday morning? Don't pay attention to what people are wearing or what the church looks like. It doesn't matter what denomination the church is. If it feels right and comfortable, and you feel like you are actually getting something out of it, then you know it is the right fit for you. Happy Sunday :)

High Five for Friday
Thank the Lord it is Friday. I know this was only a four day work week, but it seemed like the longest four days ever. By the way...January is almost over? When did that happen? Oh well, just means we are closer to spring! Yessss :)
Here is my Top 5 for this week...
1. We got to hang out with some of our amazing friends over the weekend. Friends who live here in Jacksonville and friends who came to visit from out of town. It was great spending time with them. We are so blessed to have the best friends ever.
2. I decorated my house for Valentine's Day! I actually don't care for Valentine's Day as a holiday at all, I think it's pretty stupid...however, I do like pink and hearts so I still decorate for it :)
3. My intern started teaching all of our classes completely on her own this week. While it is very challenging for me to give up control of my classroom, I love having my freedom.
4. We had an Executive Board meeting for our local Phi Mu Alumnae Chapter and made a lot of great progress! I love being our Chapter President and I'm pretty sure that I will probably be a Phi Mu officer in some capacity for life. LIOB
5. Two of my favorite Phi Mu ladies celebrated their birthdays this week. My best friend, Casey, turned 26 on Wednesday and my great grand-little, Lizzy, turned 23 yesterday!

Throwback Thursday
Today's throwback photos really aren't super "throwback" because they are from only a few years ago. However, if you are a Taylor Swift fan and own her latest album, then you will understand the reference from today's throwback theme. If not, have no fear I have provided the song at the end of the post for your listening pleasure :)
Throwback Thursday: I'm Feelin' 22
On my 22nd Birthday!
Um, can we discuss how freakin' tan I am here...I need to work on getting this back
Last semester at FSU and Phi Mu
Oh yeah, and we got married! 22 was a pretty awesome year for me :)
Now, please enjoy this musical selection brought to us by T.Swift.

19 and Crazy
Today is my best friend's birthday! I am so lucky to have such an amazing Phi Mu sister, former roommate, maid of honor and partner in crime to call my friend. We have been through a lot together in these past 7 years and it has been such a blessing to have you in my life. LIOB
Happy Birthday Casey!
And now, I would like to dedicate this song to my bestie...hopefully, she is going to blare it nice and loud from her cubicle at work so that everyone knows it is her birthday :)

First Thing
I'm stealing this post idea from one of my favorite bloggers and Phi Mu sister, Heather. Hope everyone who has the day off of work today like me is enjoying it! Happy MLK Day!
First thing you do when you wake up in the morning:
Go to the bathroom and brush my teeth
First thing you reach for when you open the fridge:
In the morning? Milk. I absolutely have to drink milk every single morning. Jared says that I drink so much milk that we should just invest in a cow.
First thing you do when you get to the gym:
The what? Gym? Yeah, I don't go there.
First thing you do when you get home from work:
Let the dogs out and then pig out on snacks.
First car:
2001 Ford Explorer Sport
First accident/traffic violation:
A drunk guy rear-ended me at a stop light when I was in high school
First thing you wanted to be when you grew up:
Veterinarian. Ballerina.
First choice beverage:
Diet coke. Wine.
First choice breakfast:
A cheeseburger. I don't like breakfast foods.
First choice dessert:
A cheeseburger. I don't like dessert.
First choice dream career:
Stay at home mom
First song that comes to mind:
"I Knew You Were Trouble" by Taylor Swift...it was just on the radio
First major purchase:
Jared and I bought a house together on April 29, 2009. I graduated from college on May 1 and we got married on May 16.
First job (aside from babysitting):
I worked as a secretary/assistant at law office in high school.
First time you flew on a plane:
We went to Dallas, Texas for Thanksgiving in 1993.
First thing you do when you get in the car:
Turn it on and put on my seat-belt.
First thing you do when you get on the computer:
Check my email.
First person you call when you have exciting news:
My mom or my best friend Casey depending on what it is
First pet:
We got a cat, Boomer, when I was five. My brother name her (yes, her) Boomer after Boomer Esiason, the football player.
First date with your significant other:
Kappa Sigma's Barnyard Bash, March 31, 2006. I wouldn't really call it a date, it was more like a frat party. But I was Jared's date to the frat party and it was the first time I ever met his sister, which makes it memorable.
First time leaving the country:
We went on a cruise to the Bahamas for Easter/my 5th birthday.

High Five for Friday
Happy Friday my loves! Today was a teacher planning day and we have no school on Monday, so I am in an especially good mood today :)
Here is my Top 5 for this week...
1. I was asked to serve as a judge for the Greek Awards at the University of North Florida here in Jacksonville. So for two evenings this week, I interviewed the amazing student leaders of UNF's Greek community in order to choose the Top 10 Greek Men and Women of UNF. This was truly an awesome experience. Listening to these students speak so passionately about their experience in Greek Life reminded me of how fortunate I was to have been able to take part in that same experience. It really made me realize that so much of who I am today is owed to my ongoing experience with Greek Life.
2. Jared and I finally made it back to church on Sunday. We have literally been out of town almost every weekend since August, so we had not been to church since then. Football season, hunting season and the holiday season pretty much run our lives from September to January. It felt great to be back!
3. The 2nd grading period is officially over, which means we are half-way done with this school year!
4. One of my dear friends surprised me on Monday by sending me flowers at work! It seriously made my day. Thanks Heather! Side note: I have had surprise "just because" flowers sent to my classroom twice so far this school year, both times from girl friends. Let's just say I have pretty awesome friends :)
5. Jared made me breakfast for dinner on Tuesday night. Waffles, yum. I felt like I was back in the sorority house, which made my night. Nostalgia. Back in college, Phi Mu would randomly serve breakfast for dinner and I loved it, which is kind of ironic because breakfast is my least favorite meal of the day. However, for some reason eating breakfast foods at dinner time just makes them so much more enjoyable.

Polished
Hi, my name is Jacki and I have a serious addiction. To nail polish. Not just any nail polish, but Essie nail polish. It is the best nail polish ever. Allow me to enlighten you.
I was never a big fan of painting my nails up until about a year ago. Every time I had ever painted my nails in the past, it lasted for like 3 days and then started chipping off which annoyed me. Of course, I went through that phase at the end of high school with acrylic nails...don't we all go through that phase? Then I discovered Essie thanks to Pinterest. One of my former co-workers inspired me to start painting my nails. She would change her nail polish religiously and I always loved seeing how cute and different her nails looked. So thanks to her, I thought I would give nail polish another try and get some of this Essie stuff everyone was raving about on Pinterest. Since then, I've become addicted.
Essie and I have a very committed relationship. I always bring my Essie polish with me to the salon and I refuse to use any other brand of polish. This polish stays perfect on my hands without any chips for around 2 weeks, which is a heck of a lot longer than any other polish I've ever used. Plus, there are so many pretty colors to choose from.
Sometimes I paint my nails myself, but most of the time I go to the nail salon and just get a polish change. Not the full manicure deal, just take the old color off and paint the new color on. It only costs 6 bucks. Quite the deal. Since I come in about every two or so weeks and bring my own polish, all the little Vietnamese women in the salon know me. They call me "the Essie girl" because I bring my Essie polish in a ziploc baggie every time. When I went into the salon today to get my color changed, one of the guys who isn't usually working when I come in said, "pick a color" and pointed to the wall of nail polishes when I walked in the door; immediately one of the ladies recognized me and says to him, "oh no, the Essie girl bring her own". So apparently I have developed quite the reputation.

Every time I go to paint my nails, I have to bust out my collection and spend a few minutes pondering, "Which one?" It mostly depends on the season and what I have coming up in the next two weeks. Like I'm not going to attend someone's wedding in a formal dress with freakin' blue nails. Every now and then I need a little change from my normal collection, so I splurge on a new color. FYI - they sell Essie at Bed Bath and Beyond, so you can use one of those 20% coupons that BB&B always has and get a good deal on your polish. You can also buy it at some CVS and Target locations or on their website. I highly recommend Essie nail polish to everyone. I'm obsessed and once you try it, you will be too.

High Five for Friday
It has been a while since I linked up with Lauren for her weekly High Five for Friday post. This week seemed to go on forever, so I am ecstatic that it is finally over. Therefore, we are celebrating the end of this week with my Top 5...and a glass of wine of course.
Here is my Top 5 for this week...
1. I got my new teaching intern for the spring semester this week. Hallelujah! Having an intern makes the next 15 weeks of my life pretty amazing. Thank you UNF College of Ed students!
2. I have been doing so well with my New Year's Resolutions thus far! Even though this was a long, exhausting week, I did not have a single drop of alcohol. I even went out to a dinner/planning meeting with my Phi Mu Alumnae Chapter and did not drink the entire time. I am so proud of myself, in fact, that I am rewarding myself with a glass of wine tonight :) Don't worry, I'm not breaking my own rules because Friday night isn't considered part of a "weekday" in my book; anything after 4:00 on Friday is the weekend.
3. I got to hang out with my Phi Mu sisters from my Alumnae Chapter on Wednesday night at a restaurant I love, Speckled Hen. We planned out some great events for spring and enjoyed a girls' evening out.
4. I worked the concession stand at my school for the girls and boys basketball games on Thursday night. I absolutely adore watching my former students play sports. They get so excited when they see me at their games and I really enjoy interacting with them outside of the classroom setting. Watching them excel at something that is so much fun for them and makes them happy makes me so proud to have been their teacher.
5. All my TV shows came back this week! My husband and I have a lot of shows that we like to watch together and so many of them premiered a new season this week. My DVR is nice and full, and I am ready for a relaxing weekend. The best show of this week was probably the premiere of The Bachelor (don't worry, I didn't make Jared watch that with me). You can read my review of the episode here. PS - I can't believe that I am considering The Bachelor to be one of the best things about my week...who am I?

Train Wreck
Last night was a pretty epic evening of television. I still can't decide which was program ended up being a bigger train wreck, the season premiere of The Bachelor or the BCS National Championship. Both were absolutely horrifying.
But first, let's rewind about 6 months. I never watched this Bachelor/Bachelorette nonsense until last summer. My sister-in-law lived with us over the summer and forced me to watch it with her. Much to my dismay, after the first two episodes, I was hooked. Damn her. After that season ended, I swore I would never watch that crap again. And then Sean from last season became the new Bachelor. Damn it again.
So last night I had a decision to make: The Bachelor season premiere or the BCS National Championship? Pre-"summer of 2012 Jacki" would have never even hesitated in that decision. Football always comes first. However, I let my guard down and decided to watch The Bachelor in our bedroom while Jared watched the game on the big screen. I figured that by the time The Bachelor was over, it would be halftime and I would be able to catch the rest of the game. Boy, did I make the right decision. During commercial breaks, I would switch over and watch a few minutes of thebloodbath game and then go back to my far more entertaining television program. I watched part of the second half before declaring this the most boring game of football ever played and going to sleep.
So here are my thoughts on the 30 minutes of the BCS National Championship that I did actually watch...
- I feel bad for the Notre Dame fans that paid like $1500 to witness that butt-kicking in person. Yuck.
- Alabama won another national title. Whoop-dee-do. Who cares. I really wanted Notre Dame to win just so that someone else could have a turn.
- Sometimes I wonder about the stylists they hire to dress the ESPN College Gameday analysts. Whoever put that tie on Urban Meyer should be fired. Immediately.
- Jared and I have decided that we think ESPN reporter Samantha Steele is pregnant and that is why her and Christian Ponder (Minnesota Vikings quarterback and former FSU quarterback) got married after only dating for like a month. She has been wear lots of flowy shirts lately...perhaps?
- AJ McCarron's girlfriend, Katherine Webb, is freakin' adorable. My sorority sister, Anna, works for the company that produces some of the pageants here in the southeast and she actually knows Katherine personally (Katherine was Miss Alabama in 2012). Let's just say, he's a lucky guy.
- Overall, the game was boring and disappointing. A game between the best two teams in the country should at least be exciting and remotely close in score. Oh well, football season is over now. Sad face.
Now, onto the bigger and more exciting train wreck of the evening, The Bachelor...
My sister-in-law has a sorority sister who writes a phenomenal blog about reality television. You can read her commentary on last night's episode here. She sums up the episode well, gives the play-by-play and her commentary is much more entertaining and witty than mine. It's a good read. Enjoy.

Sean and his ladies...who all apparently dressed for the senior prom?
First of all, I feel bad for some of these girls and their parents. Especially their parents. I can't imagine what it must feel like to watch your daughter make an ass of herself on national television. Each time one of the girls got out of the limo I would think to myself, "there's no way that she can be crazier than that last one". And then she was. I understand that there are 25 girls meeting him and each one wants to make a lasting impression, but some of these girls went a little over board.
So I think that more than anything, The Bachelor can teach us what not to do when meeting a cute guy for the very first time...
- Arriving in a wedding dress. That's not funny. It's crazy.
- Attempting to do a back walk-over in a floor-length gown and falling on your head in the process.
- Pulling a silk tie from your cleavage and making inappropriate 50 Shades references.
- Attempting to dress like Cinderella and talk in a fake Southern accent.
- Proclaiming that your father is going to break his legs if he breaks your heart.
- Making it obvious that you had too much to drink on the ride in
- Singing while looking like an oompa loompa. Just say no to spray tanning.
Ultimately, I think my favorite girls so far are Lesley and Sarah. I liked Tierra when she first got out of the limo, but I am thinking that she is going to cause a lot of drama ultimately. Mostly based off the fact that in the upcoming previews, they show her acting crazy, being mean and screaming at the other girls, and then getting hauled off in an ambulance on a stretcher. Karma? This is going to be one hell of a season.
My sister-in-law has a sorority sister who writes a phenomenal blog about reality television. You can read her commentary on last night's episode here. She sums up the episode well, gives the play-by-play and her commentary is much more entertaining and witty than mine. It's a good read. Enjoy.

A Birthday Surprise
This past weekend, Jared and I surprised his best friend/best man/fraternity brother for his birthday. We drove down to Ft. Lauderdale on Friday night and just showed up at Mark and Christina's house. Christina was in on this plan the entire time, we've been plotting for weeks. We rang the doorbell and Mark answered the door. He was completely shocked to see us standing on the other side. We spent Friday night just hanging out at their house catching up since we hadn't seen them in over 2 months.
I was very excited that part of our trip included getting to meet Mark and Christina's daughter, Ava, who is 2 months old. Jared and I had to take turns posing with our pseudo-"niece" of course.
Saturday morning, the boys made Christina and I breakfast while we lounged around and drank mimosas. We sure know how to pick good husbands :)
We spent the afternoon at American Social on Las Olas enjoying some drinks and celebrating Mark. The surprises kept coming when a number of Mark's friends just kept randomly showing up at the bar. Just when he thought the surprises were over, someone else would show up and join the party!
Sunday was Mark's actual birthday, so that morning the boys went golfing and then we all headed to Coconuts out in Ft. Lauderdale Beach for some brunch. The food and atmosphere was great and of course the company was awesome too :)

Besties!
The sneaky girls behind all of these surprises :)
Our table couldn't support our ever growing party so we just took over the back quadrant of the bar
We ended our evening with dinner at Tap42

Ringing in 2013
I hope 2013 is treating everyone well thus far! Since my Seminoles won their bowl game and the Gators lost theirs, everyone is pretty happy around here at the Roche household. Jared and I have started our New Year's Resolutions and everything is going well so far...except for the fact that I had to go back to work. Boo. I guess teachers can't be on vacation forever. What a shame. Even though 2012 was a pretty tough year for us and our families, we sure did have a good time celebrating it coming to an end. Here is a little recap of our New Year's celebrations...
Our friends, Mike and Emily (yes, bachelorette party Emily), hosted a New Year's Eve dinner party at their house this year. A sit-down dinner party, you know, like for real adults. It was pretty nifty. They have this adorable, little house in one of the historic districts of Jacksonville which accommodated our 18-person dinner party. We had to put two tables together to create a giant table that extended beyond the dining room into the living room to seat all 18 of us and we had a blast enjoying our family-style meal together.
After dinner, we popped champagne, posed for some photos, and then headed out to a nearby bar for the midnight countdown celebration.
Counting down to midnight and ringing in the New Year! It was a fabulous way to spend the evening welcoming 2013 with such great company.
On New Year's Day, my Seminoles played in the Orange Bowl and won! Jared and I really wanted to go to the game, but since I had to go back to work the next day, we just couldn't. So we met up with family and friends at Latitude 30 to watch the game. My sister-in-law, Erika, and I go shopping together regularly and always seem to pick out the same stuff...especially when it comes to gameday attire...cute garnet and gold stuff is hard to come by. While neither of us really care that we basically own the same wardrobe, statistically we are bound to match every now and then. So when we both showed up at the restaurant to watch the game on Tuesday, this is what happened...oops :)

The handsome fella I got to kiss at midnight...lucky me :)
Every time we get together, we have to take a Kappa Sigma wives photo. And we have to stand in our specific order...chronologically by wedding date. We're pretty cool.
There were even festive party favors. My sister-in-law and I like to take awkward photos.
